Automobile manufacturers, environmentalists, researchers and scientists have been working anxiously on making hybrid cars for a greener and cleaner environment. We all know that all internal combustion engines that utilize fossil fuels have made a great impact on global warming. The Japanese automobile makers Honda and Toyota are leading the field in developing hybrid cars.

Generally, a hybrid car uses two different sources to power the vehicle, and they are used either alternatively or all at once. It is like a moped, which was has two power sources; one is pushing on the pedals with your feet like a cyclist, and the other power source is a small motor or engine fitted to power the bicycle. Correspondingly, hybrid cars have two power sources. One is the conventional internal combustion engine, and the other is an electric motor driven by batteries.

There are variations of hybrid cars, which are parallel hybrid, series hybrid and series-parallel hybrid. The parallel hybrid has two power sources, which are an electric motor powered by batteries and an internal combustion engine. Both power sources give simultaneous power to the car.

The series hybrid has an internal combustion engine that unremittingly recharges the batteries that power an electric motor, which drives the car. The series-parallel hybrid uses a combination of both the series and the parallel drive system. Another hybrid subtype is the electric car. This car is driven by an electric motor and the batteries are recharged from an ordinary electric power plug.

There are other hybrid types of cars either in the experimental stage or in the development stage. One hybrid is the bio-diesel vehicle. In this, diesel, fuel, or used cooking oil is employed to provide power to the internal combustion engine. Honda has asserted a hybrid car that will work on water.

Hybrid cars are more pricey to create than conventional cars. The major impediment in the development of hybrid cars has been the development of ongoing batteries. Furthermore the two rare earth elements required to manufacture more powerful electric motors come from China. Analysts fear that the boom in China’s electronic industry will cause these crucial elements to be discharged by 2012.

All the significant automobile manufacturers have founded their versions of hybrid cars. More and more people are aware of the excessive damage that is being caused to earth and the dire need for working towards having a greener and cleaner planet. In the developed countries it will be viable to make commuters turn to public transport and hybrid cars. Besides, in the underdeveloped and developing countries there is no deliberation being given towards saving the environment. Till other cleaner transport choices are not made easily available in these countries, environmental pollution will continue extremely.

There is an immediate need to do more research in development of hybrid cars. Hybrid cars also have to be made cost effective, more people must be motivated to purchase them then the gas guzzling SUVs and MPVs. Daily, twenty-four hours a day, the environment is being polluted by vehicular emissions. It’s everybody’s commitment to save the earth, as it’s the sole planet we have.
